Earring Size Guide: Hoops, Huggies and Studs

Earring size is easy to get wrong because photos hide scale. Use this guide to read the millimeter sizes in a listing and pick hoops, huggies and studs that fit your ears and your style.

Hoop and huggie sizes at a glance

Hoop size is the outer diameter. 25.4 mm equals one inch. The category names vary by seller, but these ranges are a reliable guide.

NameTypical diameterHow it looks
Huggie8–15 mm (about 1/3 to 1/2 inch)Hugs the earlobe or cartilage; barely any drop
Small hoop15–25 mm (up to 1 inch)Visible ring, sits close to the lobe
Medium hoop25–40 mm (1 to 1.5 inches)Classic hoop; frames the face
Large hoop40–60 mm (1.5 to 2.4 inches)Bold statement; hangs well below the lobe
Extra large60 mm and upVery dramatic; check the weight

Stud sizes

Studs are sized by the width of the stone or design. Between 3 and 5 mm is subtle and everyday, 6 to 8 mm is more noticeable, and 8 mm and up is a clear statement. If you are between sizes, go smaller for multiple piercings and larger for a single pair you want people to notice.

Wire gauge and post length

  • Gauge. This is the thickness of the post or hoop wire. A standard earring post is about 20 gauge (0.8 mm) to 18 gauge (1.0 mm). A higher gauge number means a thinner wire. If you have a smaller or newly healed piercing, make sure the wire is not thicker than your piercing.
  • Post length. Standard posts are around 10 to 12 mm. If you have thicker earlobes or you wear earrings with a cartilage piercing, a longer post is more comfortable.
  • Closures. Push backs are common. Screw backs and leverbacks are more secure, which helps with heavier earrings and with children.

Frequently asked questions

What size hoop earring should I buy?

For everyday wear, 15 to 30 mm is a safe range. Choose 8 to 12 mm for a close, huggie look and 40 mm or more for a bold statement.

What is the difference between a hoop and a huggie?

A huggie is a small hoop, usually under about 15 mm, that sits tight to the earlobe or cartilage. Larger hoops hang lower and show more of the ring.

What gauge are most earrings?

Most earring posts and hoop wires are 20 or 18 gauge, which is roughly 0.8 to 1.0 mm thick.

How big is a 1 inch hoop in millimeters?

A 1 inch hoop is 25.4 mm. You will often see it listed as 25 mm.

What size studs look best?

Studs of 3 to 5 mm look subtle and everyday. 6 to 8 mm reads as a clear but still classic size.
